Pre-Wedding Conversation
In an interview, Chynna Phillips revealed that the night before her 1995 wedding to Billy Baldwin, she had an exceptionally difficult talk with her late father, John Phillips.
Unexpected Revelation
The 56-year-old Phillips revealed in a recent video that she was taken aback by a “very intense” talk she had with John the evening before he was meant to escort her down the aisle on her YouTube channel California Preachin’.
“We talked about some really big things that came up unexpectedly, and my dad was going through a lot of emotions, which of course rubbed off on me. I ended up spending the whole night in tears, feeling completely overwhelmed and numb. It was just so hard to wrap my head around the bombshell my dad dropped on me; I was totally caught off guard.”
Complicated Relationship Dynamics
“As for the specifics of our conversation, I’ve decided to keep that between me and my dad. He was a member of The Mamas & The Papas and passed away in 2001 from heart failure at the age of 65. Our relationship was complicated, to say the least. He was absent for most of my childhood because of his struggles with drugs. And then there’s the whole thing with my half-sister Mackenzie. She’s been open about their relationship in her autobiography, revealing a ten-year, on-and-off sexual involvement.”

Father’s Intentions
While she understood that it could seem “horrible” for her father to bring up the subject on the eve of her wedding, Phillips thought her father meant well. He might have felt pressured to “come clean” in order to clear his conscience, she believed, before walking her down the aisle in a church.
The Wilson Phillips singer and Baldwin exchanged vows the following day and have since become parents to daughters Jameson, 23, and Brooke, 19, as well as son Vance, 22.
“I recall hardly getting any sleep the night before, and I was filled with adrenaline due to the information I had received,” she said. “Yet, it turned out to be one of the most valuable conversations I’ve ever had with my father. It was without a doubt the most honest and unfiltered exchange I’d ever had with him.”
She went on to say, “There was a stark contrast there, because on one hand, it was incredibly beautiful and meaningful to me, but on the other hand, it was also very scary and unsettling… I believe he was grappling with feelings of shame and guilt, and he felt the need to unburden himself.”
It “takes time” for Phillips to create room in her heart for forgiveness, she said, calling it a “process.”
She had previously invited her sister Mackenzie as a guest on her channel in December, during which they discussed how they had indeed found forgiveness.
“Obviously, he’s an amazing songwriter, and you know, I loved his laugh, but there was this whole other side to Dad that was, I mean, kind of like a monster,” Chynna told Mackenzie. “He was so dark, and you just didn’t know who you were going to get. It was very unpredictable.”
