Mohammed Shami won’t be able to participate in IPL 2024 because he injured his left ankle and needs surgery.
Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of IPL 2024
A BCCI source informed PTI on Thursday that senior pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of next month’s Indian Premier League due to a left ankle injury. Shami will undergo surgery in the UK for the injury.
Rehabilitation Process
The 33-year-old, who is not currently part of the ongoing Test series against England, last represented India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November.
Shami traveled to London in late January to undergo a procedure where special injections were administered to his ankle. Following this treatment, he was advised to wait for three weeks before gradually starting light running activities. After this initial period of recovery, he will be able to assess his progress and determine the next steps in his rehabilitation process.
“But the injection hasn’t been effective, and now surgery is the only remaining option. He will soon travel to the UK for the surgery. Participating in the IPL seems unlikely,” stated a senior BCCI source, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Shami, who played a crucial role in India’s impressive World Cup campaign by taking 24 wickets, continued to perform despite experiencing pain due to issues with his landing. However, he did not allow this discomfort to impact his performance on the field.
Shami, who was recently honored with the Arjuna Award, has taken 229 wickets in Test matches, 195 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 24 wickets in Twenty20 (T20) matches over the course of his decade-long career.
The development raises concerns about the effectiveness of the injury rehabilitation management program designed by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for Shami.
It’s very unlikely that Shami will recover in time to participate in India’s Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home in October and November. This indicates that his rehabilitation process may take longer than anticipated, making his return for those matches improbable.
His potential aim might be the high-profile away series against Australia. Those familiar with the situation believe that the National Cricket Academy’s cautious approach has not been successful in Shami’s situation.
“Shami should have opted for surgery right away, and that decision should have been made by the National Cricket Academy. Just two months of rest and injections wouldn’t have been sufficient, and unfortunately, that’s what has transpired. He is a valuable asset, and the Indian team will require his services in Australia,” remarked the source.
